Public City Transport

Although Belgrade has about 2 million citizens and a problem
with traffic, it still does not have an undergound, nor will it get
one in near future (although it has the deepest underground
railway station in Europe).

City transport is carried out by buses, trams and trolley-buses.
The transport by buses is carried out by the municipal service
under the jurisdiction of the City Council and a couple of private
companies, which means that the buses on the streets come in
various shapes, colours and years of manufacture.

For all operators (and all kinds of transport) the ticket
is the same and it is bought on the news-stands, price:
42 dinars.* The ticket can be bought from the driver
immediately on boarding the vehicle. It is more expensive
there, 80 dinars.* The tickets should be punched in
the machines next to the doors.

Transport working hours are, roughly, from 4:30am to

11:30pm. In the night traffic the vehicles run every hour
from12:10am to 2:10am. The ticket for the night transport
costs 100 dinars* and it is bought from the driver.
In the night traffic the busses leave from the special stops
on Republic Square towards the other parts of the city.
Fine for stealing a ride or for not punching the ticket is
3,000 dinars.*

Riding on a tram is a little more exotic since the trams roll
like ships on restless seas, and when one of them breaks
down - the whole line gets blocked (that, naturally, happens
always between the two stops when it is raining).
Public city transport mainly functions well. It is a quicker
mode of transport in the old part of the city than a car since
there are special lanes for the buses in most of the streets.

Underground train station “Vukov spomenik” is interesting
because Belgrade has got one of the deepest underground train
station in Europe (43m deep) although it does not have an
underground! The escalators leading to it are 65m long and
7.5m wide.

Major city transport lines are marked on our map of Belgrade
which accompanies the guide.
