- 1 January:
The Street of the Open Heart. New Year’s Carnival in
Svetogorska Street. The programme for children (actors, musicians, Santa  Clause) and adults (cooked brandy and brine for a good morning) starts at noon.

       
 

- 13 January: Celebration of (Serbian) New Year
by the Julian calendar. Special programme in
the inns.
- 19 January: Twelfth-day. Traditional diving for
the “Epiphany Cross” on Ada Ciganlija (in the
lake) and on the Danube (Zemun quay). The
bravest of young men test their stamina and
speed in icy waters.

Belgrade Festival of Documentary and Short Film. International,

- March: International Competition of Young Musicians. Young artists (up to 30 years old) compete in the following categories: voice, composition, instrumental soloists, chamber orchestras. www.music-competition.co.yu

- 19 April: Belgrade Marathon. Apart from the international marathon there
is a half-marathon and a joy-race for amateurs. People run through the

- June 5 (40 days after Easter) Ascension Day
- Spasovdan.
The religious procession starts
from Vaznesenjska crkva (Church of the Ascensi-
on), goes along Kralja Milana Street to Terazije,
the first stop for the prayer for the health of
Belgrade citizens. Then it continues along Knez
Mihailova and Kralja Petra Streets to The Ortho-
dox Cathedral. The second stop is there for the
prayers  for alleviation of suffering, health and
prosperity. The circle is closed in the yard of
the Church of the Ascension with the prayer for
the deadheroes of Belgrade. A great number
of Belgrade citizens participate in this religious
procession.  Video

Since Despot Stefan Lazarević dedicated Belgrade to the Most Holy Virgin and gave it the status of a capital in 1403, the city took Ascension Day - Spasovdan for its Slava. This votive slava symbolically suggests the resurrection - ascension of the city from the ashes and the faith in hope and future

Parade of the participants, demonstration of martial arts, horse fighting, archery contest, fight on the log, medieval music and dance... Display of
medieval artistic craftsmanship (calligraphy, painting, heraldry, iconography,
armourer’s trade). It takes place in Lower town below Belgrade Fortress.

- June 14-17: IPI World Congress. International Press Institute World

- June-July: Kalemegdan Dusks. Concerts of popular classical music in
Kalemegdan, on the plateau of the Institute for Cultural Heritage
Conservation and in the music pavillion. Most frequently in the late
afternoon hours.
- July-August: BELEF - Belgrade Summer Festival. Theatre, dance, visual
arts, concerts, performances, installations of native and foreign artists on
Belgrade streets, squares and various unusual places. www.belef.org
- August: Beerfest. Festival of beer and music on the plateau of Lower town
below Belgrade Fortress. About thirty varieties of beer on the stalls of the
manufacturers. During the day there is a family atmosphere, and in the
evening the rock concerts start and last far into the night. Cheerful
atmosphere and positive energy. The stalls are open from 10am-4am.

- August: Boat Carnival. A whole-day party on the river: rowers, boats,
sailing-boats, jet-skis, skiers. On land: Gypsy and tamburitza orchestras,
fish soup and pork roast. Fireworks after nightfall.

- September: Belgrade Tango Festival. During the day master classes of famous dancing couples from Argentina and other countries. In the night, concerts and milongas in interesting places. www.belgradetangofestival.com
- September: BITEF. International festival of the new theatrical tendencies. Competitive. It takes place in theatres with several additional programs.

- September: International University Boat Race between eights.
Teams from Oxford, Cambridge and Belgrade University.
- October: BEMUS. International music event in the area of classical, ethnic
and contemporary music. Guests are world famous soloists and conductors.
It takes place in “Sava” Centre, Ilija M. Kolarac Foundation and other

- October: The Joy of Europe. International meeting of children where they
show the artistic craftsmanship from their countries. It takes place in
Children’s Cultural Centre, “Sava” Centre and other outdoor places in the

- October: Jazz Festival. Famous world and native jazz players in close
contact with the audience in Youth Cultural Centre.
- October: October Salon. Presents domestic authors in the areas of visual
and applied arts and design, together with the guests from abroad. It takes
place in a couple of city museums and galleries. It lasts the whole month.

- October: Belgrade Book Fair. International fair of publishers where you
can buy books. Every year a different country is an honourary guest of the

- December: Festival of Underwater Film. An international, competitive
festival, one of the largest in the world. It includes film production,
underwater photography, students’ and art works. It is held in the large
theatre in Youth Cultural Centre and the cinema of the Museum of
Yugoslav Film Archives.
- 31 December: New Year's Celebration. Organised celebration on the main
city squares and streets, with live music and fireworks. All restaurants and
discos prepare special programmes. Due to a great number of foreign
visitors, it is best to book a hotel room at least one month before the
holidays.

Apart from the listed, there are many other events we did not mention since their
schedule and content change.
